Why homeowners call us
What you get with a new roof from 315 Roofing
A whole roof system, not a shingle job
Shingles are the part you see. The membranes, metal edges, flashing and vents underneath decide whether the roof stays dry, so every one of them is part of the quote.
Materials and scope spelled out
Your written quote, sent within 24 hours of the visit, lists the layers going on, where each one goes and the price. You can compare it line by line with anyone else's.
Ten years on our workmanship
The installation is covered by a 10-year workmanship warranty. The shingle maker warrants its own product under a separate policy.
How it works
How a new shingle roof goes on, layer by layer
A shingle roof works like overlapping scales. Every layer laps over the one below it so water is always carried down and out, never back toward the house.
The order the parts go on matters as much as the parts themselves, and most of the problems that show up years later can be traced to a layer that was skipped or put on in the wrong sequence.
Everything starts with the deck, the sheathing boards fastened to the rafters. It has to be flat, dry and solid enough to hold nails, because a shingle is only as secure as the wood it is nailed into. Soft or uneven sheathing gets dealt with before anything else goes down.
The waterproof layers
Along the eaves and up through the valleys we install ice and water shield. It is a rubberized membrane that sticks to the deck and seals itself around every nail driven through it. In a place that gets heavy lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario, this is what keeps meltwater trapped behind an ice dam from reaching the wood.
The rest of the deck is covered with synthetic underlayment, a second line of defense if wind ever drives rain past the shingles.
Drip edge goes along the eaves and rakes so water drops into the gutter instead of wicking back onto the fascia, and a starter course along the bottom edge gives the first row of shingles something to seal to.
Flashing, shingles and the ridge
Anywhere the roof meets something else, metal flashing directs the water. Step flashing is woven in piece by piece where a roof slope runs into a wall, chimneys get layered flashing tied into the masonry, and plumbing vents get new boots. These joints are where roofs leak, so they get the most care.
The field of the roof is covered with architectural asphalt shingles. They are made of laminated layers, so they are thicker than the flat three-tab shingles found on many older homes, they stand up better to wind, and they give the roof more depth.
Each one is nailed in the manufacturer's nailing zone so it holds when the wind comes across the valley.
At the top, a ridge vent works with intake vents at the eaves so air flows in low and out high. That steady airflow keeps the attic close to outdoor temperature in winter, which slows ice dams, and lets summer heat and household moisture escape instead of soaking into the deck.
Colors, timing and tying into an existing roof
Before the job is scheduled we go over shingle colors with you. Architectural shingles come in a range of blended shades, and seeing a sample against your siding and trim is a good way to choose.
How long an installation takes depends on the size and pitch of the roof, how many valleys, walls and chimneys it has, and the weather. An expected schedule comes with the written quote. Asphalt shingles need some warmth and sun to seal their adhesive strips, so cold-season work can need extra care.
If you are building an addition or a garage, the new roof has to tie into the existing one cleanly where the two meet. That joint gets flashed and shingled so the old and new sections shed water as one roof.

When it applies
When a new roof installation makes sense
A new installation covers any building that needs a complete roof system rather than a patch.
You are adding on to the house
An addition, sunroom or dormer needs its own roof that ties into the existing one without creating a leak where the two meet.
A garage or outbuilding needs a roof
A detached garage or shed deserves the same layers as the house if you want it to stay dry and keep its structure sound.
A new home is going up
On a new build, the roof is installed once the framing and sheathing are ready, and doing it properly from the start avoids repairs later.
Your current roof was never built as a system
If an older roof has no ice and water shield, no drip edge and little ventilation, the next roof should be installed as a complete system rather than more shingles on top.

Questions
New roof installation questions
What is the difference between a roof installation and a roof replacement?
A replacement starts with tearing off an existing roof. An installation is the building of the new roof system itself, whether that is on a house after a tear-off, an addition, a garage or a new build. The layers that go on are the same.
What type of shingles do you install?
Architectural asphalt shingles. Their laminated construction makes them thicker and more wind resistant than three-tab shingles, and they come in many blended colors.
Why does ice and water shield matter so much here?
Utica gets heavy snow and repeated thaws. When ice builds up at the eaves, meltwater pools behind it and can be pushed under shingles. Ice and water shield seals the deck in those areas so that water does not reach the wood.
Does a new roof need new ventilation?
Usually it should be checked and balanced. Intake vents at the eaves and exhaust at the ridge keep the attic dry and closer to outside temperature, which protects the deck and helps prevent ice dams.
Can a new roof match the one on my house?
For an addition or garage we choose a shingle and color as close to the existing roof as possible. A roof that has been in the weather for years will have faded, so an exact match is not always possible, and we tell you that when we quote.
