Working in New Hartford
Roofing for New Hartford homes
New Hartford is a town in Oneida County that borders Utica to the south-west. It takes in a village of the same name as well as a good deal of land outside it, so the houses we get called to vary a lot.
Some are older two-story homes with steep gables and a chimney or two. Many are ranches, capes and split-levels from the decades after the war. Others are newer houses with busy rooflines, several valleys and an attached garage tied into the main roof.
Each of those roof types fails in its own way. On the older homes the trouble is usually age and layers: shingles laid over shingles, chimney flashing that has been patched with tar more than once, and a deck that has taken on water at some point.
On mid-century houses the low pitch and long eaves make them prone to ice dams. On newer homes the leaks tend to start where two roof planes meet, around a dormer or along a wall where the garage roof runs into the house.
The town rises as you head south away from the valley around Utica. Homes on that higher ground take more wind across their roof planes, and snow on the shaded north side of a house can sit for weeks before it clears.
Both leave marks we look for during an inspection: tabs that have lifted or creased along the ridge and the rake edges, and shingles worn thin where meltwater has run and refrozen through a long winter.
Our office is in Utica, so New Hartford is close to home for us. When we come out, we look at the whole roof rather than only the spot you called about, photograph what we find, and walk you through those pictures before you decide anything.

What we find
Common roof problems in New Hartford
These are the problems that come up again and again on New Hartford houses. Most of them start small and are cheaper to fix early.
Ice dams along long, low eaves
Ranch and split-level homes have long eave lines and shallow pitches. Warm air from the house melts the snow above, the water refreezes at the cold overhang, and the ridge of ice pushes meltwater back under the shingles. Stains on a ceiling near an outside wall in late winter are the usual first sign.
Shingles lifted by wind on higher ground
Houses on the hills to the south catch more wind than homes down in the valley. Once the seal strip on a shingle lets go, the tab flaps in every storm until it creases or tears off. A few missing shingles is a repair; a whole slope of loose ones usually means the roof has aged out.
Leaks where roof planes meet
Newer New Hartford homes often have several valleys, dormers and a garage roof joined to the house. Those joints rely on flashing and careful shingle work. When either was rushed, water finds the seam, and the leak can show up well away from where it got in.
Two or more layers on older houses
Some older homes in the village and near the Utica line carry a second or third layer of shingles. Extra layers trap heat, hide soft decking and add weight. They all come off during a replacement so the wood underneath can be checked and repaired.
Chimney flashing that has been tarred over
Freeze-thaw cycles open up the joint between brick and roof every year. A coat of tar slows the leak for a season, then cracks again. The lasting fix is new step and counter flashing, which we check on every inspection.
Local notes
What New Hartford winters do to a roof
Like the rest of the Utica area, New Hartford gets long winters with lake-effect snow that blows in off Lake Ontario, followed by a spring that swings above and below freezing for weeks. That swing is hard on a roof.
Water gets into small gaps in the flashing and the shingle edges, freezes, expands and widens the gap a little more each time. By April a roof that looked fine in the fall can have new leaks at the chimney, the vent pipes and the valleys.
Late summer and fall are the sensible time to have a roof looked at, before the first heavy snow sits on it. A second good window is right after the thaw, when any winter damage is easy to see and nothing is buried.
If the inspection shows the roof has years left, a repair is what we recommend. If the deck is soft or the shingles are failing across whole slopes, a complete roof replacement down to the deck is the fix that lasts, and the written quote explains why.
New Hartford sits right next to the villages on Utica's west side, and we work across that whole area. If you are in the next village over, see our pages for roofing in New York Mills and roofing in Whitesboro. The inspection, the photos, the written quote and the warranty are the same wherever the house is.

Roofing questions from New Hartford homeowners
Do you do roofing work in New Hartford, NY?
Yes. We repair and replace asphalt shingle roofs on houses throughout the Town of New Hartford, including the village and the areas outside it. Our office is in Utica, a short trip away.
How do I book a free roof inspection in New Hartford?
Fill in the form at the top of this page or call us. We set a time, look over the roof and the flashing, and photograph anything that needs attention. There is no charge for the visit.
Why do so many New Hartford houses get ice dams?
Long eaves, low roof pitches and attics that let warm air escape are the usual causes, and plenty of homes in town have all three. Heat melts the snow higher up, and the water freezes again at the cold edge of the roof.
Ice and water shield along the eaves and proper attic ventilation are what stop the water from getting inside.
Can my New Hartford roof be repaired instead of replaced?
Often it can. A leak at one chimney, a handful of blown-off shingles or a single bad valley is repair work. Replacement only comes up when the shingles have failed on most of the roof or the wood beneath them has gone soft, and the photos show you why.
What do I get after the inspection?
A written quote within 24 hours. It sets out what we found, what we recommend, the materials and the price, so you can compare it with any other quote you get.
What shingles do you use on New Hartford homes?
Architectural asphalt shingles. They are heavier than the old three-tab style and stand up better to the wind that comes across the higher parts of town. We go through color choices with you before anything is ordered.
Is the work covered by a warranty?
Yes. Our installation carries a 10-year workmanship warranty, and the shingles carry their own separate manufacturer warranty.
