FAQ
Roofing Questions and Answers
The questions Utica-area homeowners ask us most, in one place. If yours is not here, call and ask. 315 Roofing works on pitched, asphalt shingle roofs on homes in Oneida and Herkimer counties.
Inspections and quotes
The free inspection and the written quote
What do you look at during a free roof inspection?
The whole roof, not only the spot you called about. That means the shingles on every slope, the flashing at chimneys, walls and dormers, the valleys, the pipe boots and vents, and the gutters. Where we can reach the attic, we look at the underside of the deck for water marks, soft wood and signs of poor ventilation.
Everything we find is photographed, and we go through the pictures with you. More detail is on our roof inspection page.
Does the free inspection commit me to anything?
No. There is no charge for the visit and no obligation to hire us afterward. You keep the photos and the written quote either way.
How quickly do I get the quote?
In writing, within 24 hours of the inspection.
What does the written quote include?
What we found, what we recommend and why, the materials, the price and an expected schedule. It is written so you can set it beside another roofer's quote and compare the two line by line.
Can you give me a written report on a roof for a home sale?
Yes. We provide written reports with photos of the roof, which buyers and sellers use to understand its condition before closing. Copies of any photos we take are available on request.
Repair or replace
Repairs, replacements and what happens on the job
Will you tell me if a repair is enough?
Yes. If the problem is in one place and the rest of the roof is sound, a repair is what we recommend. Replacement comes up when the shingles are worn across the roof, the deck is soft, or leaks keep appearing in new places. Our guide on deciding between repair and replacement walks through the signs.
Why is my ceiling stain not under the leak?
Water gets in at a joint, such as a pipe boot, a valley or the flashing at a wall, and then runs along the underlayment or a rafter before it drips. The entry point is often uphill of the stain. We trace it from the attic and the roof rather than patching the spot directly above the ceiling.
Do you install new shingles over the old roof?
No. Every replacement is a full tear-off down to the deck. A layover hides soft wood, adds weight and shortens the life of the new shingles.
What if you find rotted wood once the old roof is off?
Damaged boards are cut out and replaced so the new roof is nailed into solid wood. If there is more rot than the inspection suggested, we photograph it and show you before going further.
What kind of roofs and shingles do you work with?
Pitched roofs on homes, covered in asphalt shingles. On replacements we install architectural shingles, which are thicker than the old flat three-tab style and hold up better in wind. We go over colors with you before anything is ordered.
What happens to my yard during a replacement?
We protect the landscaping during tear-off, haul away all of the old material and sweep the yard for nails before we leave.
Winter and storms
Ice dams, storm damage and active leaks
What causes ice dams, and can they be stopped?
Heat escaping into the attic melts snow on the upper roof, and the water refreezes at the cold eave. The ridge of ice holds back the next melt, which then works under the shingles. Ice and water shield along the eaves, attic ventilation that keeps the deck cold, and insulation are what stop it. Our ice dam guide for Utica homes explains each one.
A storm damaged my roof. What should I do first?
Stay off the roof and away from downed lines. Catch any water coming in, move belongings out of its way, and photograph the damage from the ground and inside the house. Then book an inspection. If the roof is open, we tarp it to keep water out until the repair is made. See storm damage roof repair for how the repair works.
My roof is leaking right now. What can I do until it is fixed?
Put a bucket under the drip and towels around it, and move furniture and electronics away. If the ceiling is bulging, keep people out from under it. Take photos with the date. Do not climb onto a wet or icy roof yourself.
Can a roof be repaired in winter?
Some repairs can be made in cold weather when the roof is clear and dry. Shingles and flashing cannot be put on over ice or snow, so a leak from an ice dam is usually contained first and repaired properly once the eave is clear.
When should I plan a roof replacement?
Most homeowners aim to have a new roof on before the first heavy snow, so late spring through fall is the usual window. The written quote includes an expected schedule for your roof.
Working with 315 Roofing
Warranty, service area and the company
What does your 10-year workmanship warranty cover?
Our installation. If something we installed fails within ten years because of how it was installed, we come back and fix it. Repairs are covered too. The shingle manufacturer's warranty on the material is separate.
Which towns do you work in?
Utica and the towns around it in Oneida and Herkimer counties. Several have their own pages: roof replacement in Rome, roof repair in Clinton, replacing a roof in New Hartford, and our roofing pages for Whitesboro homeowners, New York Mills and the village of Herkimer. The full list is on our service areas page.
Is 315 Roofing accredited with the BBB?
Yes. 315 Roofing has been a BBB Accredited Business since October 14, 2025, and its profile with BBB Upstate New York carries an A rating.
Do you work on gutters?
Yes, we install and repair gutters, although roofs are our main work. We check the gutters during every roof inspection, because a blocked or bent gutter can push water back under the roof edge.
Where are you based, and when can I call?
Our office is at 415 Homestead Dr in Utica. We are open 24 hours, so you can call or use the form whenever it suits you. Read more about the company and how we work.
