Within 24 hours of the inspection you have a written quote listing what was damaged, what will be repaired or replaced, and the price.
Repairs backed for ten years
The repair work is covered by our 10-year workmanship warranty. If something we fixed fails because of how we fixed it, we return and correct it.
How it works
What storms do to a shingle roof
A storm rarely damages a roof evenly. Wind tends to catch the edges, the ridge and the side facing the gusts. Hail marks the slopes that faced the storm. Ice and heavy snow do their work at the eaves and in the valleys.
That is why a roof can look fine from the driveway while one slope out back has a dozen loose shingles.
The damage you can see, like shingles in the yard or a branch on the roof, is usually only part of it. The rest shows up as leaks weeks or months later, after the next thaw or a long autumn rain finds the weak spots.
A careful inspection soon after a storm is how you catch it before it reaches the ceiling.
Wind damage
Each shingle is held by nails and by an adhesive strip that bonds it to the shingle below. A strong gust can break that bond and fold the shingle back.
Even if it lies flat again afterward, it now has a crease across it and no seal, so the next wind lifts it more easily and rain can be driven underneath. Creased and unsealed shingles are often missed because they look normal from the ground.
Wind also pulls at ridge caps, drip edge and loose flashing, and it can tear the shingles at the rakes, the sloped edges at the gable ends. Spring storms moving through the Mohawk Valley often bring exactly this kind of gusting.
Hail damage
Hail strikes knock the protective granules off asphalt shingles and can bruise or crack the mat underneath. A hit spot may look like a dark, shiny patch where the granules are gone.
Without granules, the asphalt is exposed to the sun and ages faster, so hail damage often turns into a leak later rather than right away. Dents in gutters, downspouts and metal vents are a good clue that the shingles took hits too.
Ice, snow and fallen limbs
Heavy lake-effect snow loads, ice dams and freeze-thaw cycles crack shingles, lift flashing and push water up under the eaves. Branches that come down in a storm can puncture the deck or crush a section of roof.
In those cases the damaged sheathing and framing get repaired first, then the underlayment, flashing and shingles are rebuilt around them so the area is part of the roof again rather than a patch.
Documenting the damage, insurance and temporary covering
Photograph what you can see from the ground right after the storm: shingles in the yard, the roof from each side, dents in gutters, and any stains inside. Note the date. If you contact your insurance company, they will make their own decisions about coverage, and good dated photos are useful to have either way.
We can give you copies of our inspection photos for your records or your insurer.
If the roof is open to the weather, we can cover the damaged area with a temporary tarp until the repair.
When the inspection shows the storm only finished off a roof that was already worn out, we tell you that honestly. Sometimes a repair is the right call, and sometimes the roof is due for replacement anyway.

Signs
Signs of storm damage to look for
Check from the ground and from inside. Do not go up on a roof after a storm yourself, especially when it is wet or icy.
Shingles or pieces of shingle in the yard
Any shingle on the ground came from somewhere on your roof, and the spot it left is now open to rain and snowmelt.
Lifted, folded or creased shingles
Shingles that stand up, flap in the wind or show a straight line across them have lost their seal and need attention.
Dents in gutters, downspouts or vents
Metal shows hail hits clearly. If the gutters are dented, the shingles above them were struck by the same hail.
Granules piled at the downspouts
A sudden pile of grit after a storm means hail or wind has scrubbed granules off the shingles.
A new leak or stain after the storm
Water inside after wind, hail or a thaw usually means a shingle, vent or flashing was damaged and is letting water through.

Questions
Storm damage questions
My roof looks fine from the ground. Could it still be damaged?
Yes. Creased shingles, broken seals and hail bruises are hard to see from the yard. They often show up as leaks months later. A close inspection of each slope is the only reliable way to know.
Will my insurance pay for the repair?
That is decided by your insurance company and your policy, not by us. What we can tell you is what we found on the roof, with photos, and what the repair involves. Taking your own dated photos right after the storm is a good idea whatever you decide.
Should I climb up and look myself?
No. A storm-damaged roof can have loose shingles and weak spots in the deck, and wet or icy shingles are slippery. Look from the ground, from windows and in the attic, and leave the roof itself to us.
What does hail damage look like on shingles?
Dark spots where the granules have been knocked off, sometimes with a soft or cracked feel underneath. Dented gutters and metal vents are a strong sign the shingles were hit too.
Does storm damage always mean a new roof?
No. Many storms damage a section or a few slopes, and those areas can be repaired. A replacement makes sense when the damage is widespread or the roof was already near the end of its life.
